There is a line in that book, one of Lord Henry’s little poisons: “Beauty is a form of Genius—is higher, indeed, than Genius, as it needs no explanation.” It is precisely in this sense that I think of Gris Dior: a beauty so impeccably groomed and yet so curiously remote, a presence that holds the world at an exquisite distance even as it awakens in others a restless desire to draw nearer. Oakmoss and patchouli, veiled in a bergamot haze, sketch an opening the colour of wormwood. The oakmoss is of an unusual softness, a silver down rather than a rough bark; one imagines the fingertips sinking into its cool, yielding surface as into some pale, luxurious velvet. Soon the composition grows more enigmatic: dry, bright woods emerge—polished young cedar and a sandalwood with the easy bearing of an aristocrat—lifting the green herbaceousness, giving it bones, structure, and the gleam of well-kept paneling. Amber and rose melt into one another like warmth stealing into a marble room, lending depth and a subtle petalled softness without ever disturbing the fragrance’s composure. They do not shout their presence; they simply deepen the shadows and lend colour to the cheek of an otherwise perfectly controlled face. Though Gris Dior lies close to the skin, this discretion does not thin it or rob it of intensity. The notes are blended with a kind of cruel ingenuity, every seam hidden, every angle smoothed, so that the whole appears impeccable and without flaw. It leaves behind the impression of a man who never ages, never blushes, and never permits you a glimpse of the passions and demons that must surely writhe beneath the untroubled surface of his exquisitely handsome face.
