Contributor Guidelines

Version 1.0. Effective 3 September 2026.

Thank you for contributing to smell100. Every entry you add or improve helps more people find their way into the world of fragrance, and we are glad to have you building it with us.

These guidelines keep the database accurate and consistent as it grows. They cover the factual entries only. Your reviews and Hot Takes remain entirely your own.

Factual fields

Perfume name, brand, year, target gender, country, perfumers, notes, description, image.

Every factual field comes from an official source. None of them carries your own interpretation.

1. Sources

Every submission includes at least one source link.

Accepted:

  • The fragrance house: website, product page, press material
  • The house's official shop
  • An authorised retailer's listing

Not accepted:

  • Other fragrance databases
  • Reviews, blogs, forums, videos, social media
  • Your own experience of the fragrance

2. Notes

Enter the notes exactly as the house lists them.

  • House publishes a pyramid: fill Top, Middle and Base.
  • House publishes a single list: tick “This house does not publish a note pyramid” and fill the Note List.
  • One or the other. Never both.
  • House publishes no notes: leave empty.

3. Description

Use the house's official text, or write it in your own words with the same meaning.

Do not add your own impressions. Do not change the meaning. Do not take text from another database, a review or a blog.

4. Image

The bottle, and only the bottle. White or transparent background. Use the official product image.

No packaging, props, hands, text or watermarks.

5. Other fields

Name, brand, year, country, perfumers: as stated by the house. Not stated by the house: leave empty.

Target gender: as the house presents it. Not stated: Unisex.

6. Entries

Nobody owns an entry. Entries are built by many contributors, and editing after someone else is normal.

7. Rejecting an edit

A rejection states one of these reasons:

  • No source provided
  • Source is not an official source
  • Personal interpretation in a factual field
  • Content contradicts the cited source
  • Text taken from somewhere other than the fragrance house
  • Duplicate of an existing entry

8. Entries before 3 September 2026

Not treated as violations. Brought in line over time.
