Musk & Musk by Oud Al Anfar (Anfar 1950) is not a whispering skin scent but a proclamation: a white‑musk that arrives, not on tiptoe, but with trumpets and the measured step of legions. It feels less like a fragrance and more like an apparition, a clean, crystalline presence striding through the day with a confidence that borders on the mythic. The opening is a razor‑sharp blend of citrus and white musk, cutting through the air with almost martial precision. In cold weather this can read as bracing, even too masculine and aggressive, like an officer’s command on a frost‑silvered field, yet under summer heat the same accord becomes a benediction of sparkling freshness, descending like a cool invisible waterfall onto overheated skin. This is the only musk that refuses to be shy or timid; it comes with its own trumpets and ordered phalanx, easily evoking Gabriel—the Herald of the Heavenly legions—presiding over a first moment in which scalpel‑bright citrus and white musk cut away the day’s residue to reveal a bare, purified surface. As it settles, white musk never relinquishes its command of the composition. It remains crystalline, sharp and clean, conjuring the sensation of purest skin after a cool shower: untouched by oils, creams or sweat, as if the body had just stepped out of some ritual bath where all trace of the mundane was washed away. Around this core, white florals appear as neroli and petitgrain wrapped in bergamot zest—structures that lean masculine, yet sound unexpectedly bright and playful on a woman. Familiar timbre of ambroxide threads through, lending softened cleanness and a refined musk accord that rounds the edges of the razor-sharp blade without dulling it. The amber here is not baroque or honeyed but moonstone‑white and dry, like polished steel under moonlit night. It does not sparkle or plunge into depths; it shimmers in cool silvery white‑blue, a disciplined halo rather than a blazing fire, - Uriel’s cool clarity and inescapable brilliance of his stratagems. Beneath, the woods are dry blond with no sap or shavings, just perfectly sanded timber that has caught enough sun to release its tempered aroma. Cedar naturally comes to mind: sharp and determined as a log sarissa spear of a Spartan phalanx, young and cut in late spring, giving the weapon flexibility and resilience. Thuja, a young cypress, comforts the white musks on its scale‑like foliage, adding a quiet evergreen backbone to the gleaming architecture of the scent's composition. Musk & Musk is essentially a “triple musk” composition—white musk at the helm, ambroxide in refined counterpoint, and additional musk blends and nuances supporting the structure. The result is a fragrance of remarkable character, boldness and power, with great intensity, notable projection and superb longevity well beyond 10 hours in any weather. Here the lore becomes truly alive: musk reigns like a celestial host, but not an sugary-innocent one. Lucifer—the brightest light in all the Heaven—is not as a figure of excess or foreboding darkness, but a rebellious and incomparable brilliance of musk's accord, a musk that refuses to be a mere background and insists on its own primordial originality, presence and assured position. It is angelic in everything, including its defiance and challenge to the what is expected, a scent that wears its purity like armour rather than a shroud. Another remarkable trait of the Musk & Musk is its role as a base for layering. This perfumes serves as an almost ideal foundation for gourmands, spices, woods and florals, blending beautifully with all and anchoring even the most capricious perfumes while standing its ground. In a Kabbalistic mood you might imagine it as a central pillar in an olfactory Tree of Life: musk as a Yesod‑like foundation stabilising the energies above it, with Raphael, Gabriel, Uriel and Lucifer no longer separate presences but facets of one complex entity—healing clarity, announcing trumpets, moonlit calm and intellect and rebellious luminosity folded into a continuous, impeccably clean trail. The drydown brings just a touch of sweeter, powdery notes, as though a gentle veil was drawn over the day, yet musk remains supreme, never yielding its throne to anything or anyone. All along Musk & Musk stands as a study in exalted purity and its often ignored power: trumpets and legions, moon-cold steel and Spartan unyielding persistence, angelic purity with rebellious luminosity—for those ready to let their scent speak clearly, decisively and maintain its presence unchallenged and admired by all.
