The bergamot is uncommonly youthful, leaning towards lemon zest rather than its customary bitter-sharp gravity. Incense hangs like a gauze veil around the woody-vanilla heart, creating a peculiar and beautiful duality: the airy luminosity of Tahitian vanilla, yet also the warmth and near-creamy richness of vanilla planifolia. There is more than one vanilla here, and each is outstanding in both quality and rendering. True to the German pursuit of quality and operational perfection, this perfume is impeccably executed: the blend is a masterpiece, and its diffusion feels like perfection made liquid. As it warms and melts into the skin, it grows ever more sensual without becoming amorphous or vulgar. Woods and ambroxan draw the clear, elegant framework that the composition faithfully follows, while that youthful bergamot retains an impressive clarity and camaraderie with the other notes. Its intensity is mesmerising, with projection and sillage thoughtfully tempered. It is almost impossible to believe this is an eau de toilette, so enveloping and luxurious is its embrace. This is the finest vanilla-incense composition I have had the pleasure of experiencing to date. The dry-down is a delicately smoked woody vanilla: burnt-velvet-like in its contrasting sensations beneath the fingertips.
