An autumn of British elegance, with just a whisper of sensuality

Dear Perfume Lover,

Ah, September! The lingering abundance of late summer slowly giving way to golden autumn. Sunlight turning softer and more golden, mornings growing crisp, and dark evenings becoming wonderfully cosy once again.

It is a marriage of harvest richness and that quiet sense of transience that belongs so beautifully to this time of year; a season when we slowly begin to wrap ourselves in warm wool and tweed and reach once more for a comforting cup of tea.

For my September column, I would therefore like to invite you to a classic British country estate. Let us spend an autumn afternoon there, in the company of its residents, and discover the fragrances that might accompany them, shall we?

We begin our visit in the library, where volumes collected by generations of the estate's residents gather dust with quiet pride. The gentlemen linger over whisky and cigars, settled deep into their leather Chesterfield sofas, discussing the important matters of the world as only gentlemen can.

Dessert-like maple syrup rests against a soft veil of smoke, all wrapped in the gentle sweetness of the earth and the mellow richness of harvest time. Just as the kitchen is the heart of the house, its heart within a heart is the great stone fireplace, glowing with warmth and fragrant wood, while chestnuts roast gently in the flames.

Their slightly charred aroma mingles with the warmth of the late-afternoon air stealing into our kitchen through a half-open window. Beyond it lies the garden, still fragrant with autumn flowers. The sweetness of blossoms and roasted chestnuts intertwines in the air, delicious, comforting and quietly indulgent. It promises cosy hours devoted to the innocent pleasures of gossip, laughter and little delights for the palate.

Casse-Noisette by Les Néréides is precisely this kind of pleasure. A creamy bouquet of flowers intertwines with the warming aroma of roasted chestnuts and nuts, creating a splendid union. As the fragrance develops, it melts into an even deeper creaminess while remaining classically elegant, feminine and enveloping. One of the most beautiful creations I have encountered in recent times.

Allow yourself a little of this innocent indulgence. And when dusk begins to settle over the estate, we shall make our way upstairs, to the bedroom...

Angel Garden of Stars La Rose Angel by Mugler: the seductive sweetness of an elegant rose

Heavy velvet curtains shield the lady's boudoir and bedroom from the moonlight and the cool night air. In crystal candleholders, candlelight multiplies into tiny rainbows, while sumptuous bedding offers the purely hedonistic pleasure of sinking into its softness. At the dressing table, feminine treasures are gathered in delightful abundance. As we know, no lady can ever have too many.

Jewels rest upon delicate lace, while bottles of perfume and cosmetics admire their own reflections in the crystal mirror. And there, before it, sits our lady herself: sensuality and refinement embodied in a single woman.

Sweetness, sensuality, fire and strength. There is something almost magnetic about the aura surrounding her.
