My decision to blind buy Petra was shaped by its name—evoking the ancient city immortalised in adventure films and historical narratives. Yet the fragrance takes an entirely different path. There is no overt sense of antiquity here, and notably, nothing is lost because of it. Petra opens with a striking plum note—crisp, slightly unripe, with a zesty skin that feels vivid and alive. This is quickly accompanied by a rich thread of molasses. While rum is often cited in similar compositions, here it is unmistakably molasses that takes centre stage—dense, textured, and deeply familiar. The pairing is unexpectedly harmonious: green plum and molasses create a contrast that feels both vibrant and grounded, lifted by a subtle, spicy zest that adds intrigue. The overall impression carries the hue of dravite tourmaline—yellow-green with warm ochre undertones. The transition into the heart is seamless and self-assured. Rather than arriving abruptly, it unfolds with quiet elegance. Tuberose emerges, accompanied by coconut—an inclusion I approached with hesitation. Coconut can often overwhelm, yet here it is handled with precision. Instead of dominating, it enhances the creamy facets of tuberose while tempering the richness of the molasses, preventing the composition from tipping into excess. Meanwhile, the plum lingers, now riper and rounder, maintaining its crisp edge while weaving the composition together. The result is a beautifully balanced and unexpectedly addictive accord. As the fragrance evolves, the plum gradually recedes, giving way to a soft interplay of tuberose, coconut, vanilla, and musk. This phase is airy, delicately sweet, and effortlessly inviting—never cloying, never heavy. It carries a comforting, almost joyful quality that draws you back repeatedly, inviting closer attention. The dry-down leans into musk with a gentle, spiced warmth—perhaps a nuance of praline—remaining refined and well-proportioned. Projection is notable without becoming overpowering; Petra entices rather than overwhelms. Longevity is solid, with over six hours of presence, particularly on fabric, while on skin it softens into an intimate, quietly flirtatious aura after around four hours. Petra is a testament to thoughtful composition and restraint. It delivers both character and wearability, balancing contrast with cohesion. Above all, it reflects Lattafa’s continued ability to craft imaginative, high-quality fragrances that offer genuine pleasure at an accessible price point.
