this is a fantastic perfume. it now seems I have a very strange relationship with the perfume. I bought it when it was launched, in 2010. I still remember all those moments first smelling it, wearing it and just being mesmerized. what I also remember clearly was the somewhat different pyramid of Notes used. I remember Clove-oil, and most definitely I remember it contained Castoreum. I still have this bottle and a back-up bottle in its box. and now I discovered the real history of this flacon: I must have used it sparsly (sparsely) because there is still 90% in it !! and I noticed the newer 'Frédéric Malle Éditions de Parfums' have a white imprint on, in, the matte black caps whereas all those, bought from off 2000 have around the rim on top indented letters without colour. I saw it at 'Al Waad', Promise, which has (also before the Estée Lauder take-over) a white Emblem on the (equally matte black) cap. so I concluded 'this is an authentic Portrait of a Lady' (cap) but I had expected I had used it more. and when the Collection grows, of perfumes, it firstly becomes a 'Collection', and some perfumes disappear behind others or you use (and seemingly, have used) them frugally, out of fear you will run out of it. but so extreme I haven't seen it yet in my 'Parfumerie Clôs'. I never reviewed this perfume which is one of my all-time favorites again from Dominique Ropion and I remember everyone commented upon it when wearing it. the perfume contains Roses in such dosage it makes you feel Heavenly but what I also recall are the narratives around it in fashion magazines. the perfume seemed to contain the whole (botanical, vegetal, fysical) Rose, roots, clinging earth and dirt, thorns, stems, leaves and Flowers all at once. the satanic side of Roses comes fully to the fore. Patchouli, Clove, Incense, (Castoreum) and here Ambergris all contribute to the headiness and denseness of the perfume (all, qualities I crave for). Blackcurrant, Sandelwood, Ylang all make this perfume unforgettable. and concerning the Notes: at least I have a 90% full Bottle with all the dirty notes in it and I believe the Estée Lauder version (but this was the case also already before the take-over) made that I saw different 'Pyramids' each time I looked. here above Ambroxan is mentioned but not shown, plus the White Musk which can also do her tricks. and the above stated assumption that 'Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady is available in high concentration of perfume from over 50% in bottles of 50 and 100 mL' according to me is designated towards this very perfume in this bottle upon my desk. Ça Toute Folle !
