Aromatic Elixir is an odd perfume, yet I love it. my consciousness about perfumes started in the late 70s so I have known all the mossy chypres of then. Miss Dior, Chanel No.19, Ysatis, 'Y' d'Yves Saint Laurent, Ivoire of Balmain, Mitsouko, of older fame, Estée by Estée Lauder, the first Private Collection, etc. Aromatics Elixir seems to tenfold the aspirations, expectations, presence and intensity of all her sisters nevertheless in such refinement. I love this ultrastrength bc my 'perfumial puberty' laid in the 80s where the perfumes went ballistic. yet AO is strange when someone 'uninitiated' stumbles upon it and probably smells medical utensils, chemical wafts, herbal density. my experience says these two 'perceptions' go simultaneously through each other: the one where the perfume imposes itself as one dense, inescapable athmosphere; and the other where the multitude of ingredients and variety of flowers, spices, herbs, really do come to the fore facettuous and in a complex layeredness. I always have to have one flacon present although my collection prevents ever still an emptying out of whichever (heady, heavy, rich, too-much) perfume I would want that day (and moment). AO is an indispensable presentism in its treacherously simple flacon. (2019) this perfume I have since the 1980s. of course it is one of the severe Chypres of the 1970s from Estée Lauder (Clinique) with Estée (1968), Aliage (1972), Azurée (1969), Private Collection (1973, I had the perfume), Eau de Private Collection [1980s] & debatable if a downright Chypre but I think so, White Linen (1978). from Aromatics Elixer at a given moment I also bought the 'Aromatics Elixir Perfumer's Reserve Clinique for women' (2011) and thoroughly enjoyed this further concentrated perfume for which was already an 'Elixir' itself. yet quickly gave it away to a woman Friend in Montana when it was still possible to Fly-Off Perfumes. the perfume we have here is a Legend. Immediately I loved it (I think I met it in 1974 and from the 1970s I was equally enamored by Chypres (Y, Ivoire, Jean-Louis Scherrer [1], No19, Cristalle, Mitsouko etc.) but what drove me foremost were the Classic Perfumes of which some were Chypres (Miss Dior, Fidji although I found it somewhat 'light', arguably Rive Gauche). what strikes me again when spritzing this perfume is the Astringent effect of the perfume. Sage, Lemon Verbena, Aldehydes clearly detectable and loved, even Chamomile together shall have a sinister working in this. further it is the stifling (but loved) Super Imposition of the Oakmoss which is legendary plus the Patchouli, Brazilian Rosewood, Vetiver, Bergamot, Musk, Sandelwood and Coriander which all lend this perfume a sturdy Woody, Spicy, Frisky and Resinous (Incense) Backbone. for the Poitrine there is the Wealth of Flowers certainly and decidedly throdding, flowing forward: Rose, Carnation, Geranium, Chamomile, Ylang, Orris, Tuberose, Jasmine, Orange Blossom all lend the perfume next to its austerity intuitively seeping in an as Formal as Softening Floralcy and Flowing Powderiness. of course it is the alchemy which takes care of the perfume in its entirety. the Back-Straightening Effect of this perfume actually is a relief. lateron the 1980s will fullheartedly explode. with all perfumes that I still love to Death. yet that this Category also had its impact on my perfumial habitualisations is as either irreversible as Dramatically Hysterical even if these terms will never have passed 'the Brief'. (I now am also thinking about Creed's underappreciated Hell of a Perfume Irisia.) the quasi-similarities are unmistakable. (today April, 4th, 2026)
