A season of grace: the romance of a British summer

My dearest fragrance enthusiast, allow me to take you to the seaside this July. We won't be basking on the sun-warmed sands of tropical resorts, immersed in notes of ylang-ylang, coconut, and piña colada. Instead, we shall journey to the British coast and, following in the footsteps of Jane Austen, settle beneath the shelter of a charming wooden seaside gazebo. There, accompanied by the crisp sea breeze of Albion, we shall indulge in a cup of exquisite tea. If you have ever lost yourself in the pages of Sanditon, you will instantly recognize the atmosphere I am trying to evoke. If not, I wholeheartedly encourage you to discover this beautiful novel. But for now, let us return to the perfumes.

When selecting this month's fragrances, I chose those that not only delight the senses in the refreshing summer air gently infused with verdant greenery, but are also housed in the most beautiful flacons, ones that would have looked perfectly at home upon the dressing table of the great novelist herself.

Daphne Bouquet: the grace of a British summer

How could one write about a British summer without mentioning Penhaligon's? Daphne Bouquet is a refined honeyed sweetness woven from the most delicate blossoms. A charming, enchanting scent that one can easily imagine a distinguished lady, or even a member of the Royal Family, wearing in the tranquility of a country estate or a seaside resort.

It announces itself like a true lady, in the most subtle way. The delicate, airy Daphne blossoms sparkle with the juicy greenness of blackcurrant leaf.

What a marvellous, marvellous scent indeed.

Santa Maria Novella: the charming Fresia

Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella is one of the world's oldest fragrance houses, founded in Florence in 1221. Its rich heritage, Italian craftsmanship, centuries-old botanical traditions, and understated luxury are easy to imagine on the vanity of Jane Austen herself.

Romantic Rosa Gardenia, the captivating cologne Melograno, the vintage herbal Pot Pourri, and the fresh, green Rosa Novella are all creations that flourish in the summer months. Yet for today's selection, I chose the less obvious Fresia. If you have not yet discovered it, I promise it will be a delightful acquaintance.

I will go so far as to say that this is the most successful, beautiful, and captivating freesia I have encountered so far. It is not the scent of a single flower, but a composition of classic floral accords, powdery musk, and subtle, almost herbaceous nuances in the base, as the fragrance settles intimately close to the skin.

I would call it a vintage freesia, as it carries the charm of classic, beautifully refined, timeless femininity and the grace of a true lady.

Parfums de Marly: the captivating Lady Delina

Ah, Delina. The lady on everyone's lips in the world of perfumery. How many graceful fragrance debutantes have been measured against this grand dame? And yet she remains as beautiful in her modesty as she is charming in her sweetness.

It is the very embodiment of classic romantic femininity. An elegant, pastel-pink rose composition that mirrors the flacon itself. Shimmering facets of fruits and rhubarb bring a youthful brightness, softening the floral heart of rose and peony, making it lighter, fresher, and less formal. In the base, woody and incense-like nuances are remarkably smooth and understated. A subtle gourmand sweetness adds depth and complexity, where the innocence of a young girl gracefully intertwines with the conscious allure of a grown lady.

Each composition captures the gentle beauty of summer, like a fresh breeze carrying accords of vibrant greenery and delicate garden and wildflowers, pleasantly dispersed through the crisp sea air. These fragrances are ethereal, yet perceptible, with a delicate sillage and good longevity on fabric. Delicate and romantic, charming and delightful.
