Inspired by the "black beyond black" of painting, this work is a profoundly philosophical piece that overturns preconceived notions about neroli as a fragrance ingredient. From the sparkling top notes of tangerine, lemon, and bergamot, the fresh scent of freshly picked neroli unfolds. Its freshness possesses an elegance reminiscent of amenities in a luxury hotel, and at first glance, it seems like a very approachable fragrance. However, why was "neroli" chosen from this jet-black art? The answer to this question becomes clear when we confront Soulages' paintings. Just as Soulages layered black paint multiple times, reflecting light through its unevenness and texture, Guerlain also meticulously layers neroli-like orange blossom and citrus to create a "surface" in the fragrance. The neroli depicted here is not like the dazzling sunlight, but rather like a "quiet light" that reflects faintly yet sharply in the deep darkness (smoked tea). The shadows emphasize the radiance emanating from the overlapping layers of citrus. When you notice this allure, the subtle lingering notes of ambrette and vanilla lead you into a mysterious abyss. Using traditional ingredients, a natural and gentle radiance is found within the deep black. Guerlain's skill in creating a fragrance where neroli takes center stage through an artistic and philosophical approach—drawing out light by layering black—is astonishing and moving. This is almost the first time I've approached perfume with such a philosophical question! Why neroli in black? Wouldn't leather or incense be more appropriate? But layering leather-like scents doesn't necessarily create a beautiful "light = radiance." Considering that, the radiance created by layering citrus makes perfect sense! It would be a shame to simply enjoy this fragrance. I recommend enjoying it more artistically.
